Questions About Custom Calligraphy

Wait, what is calligraphy? What are block letters?

Calligraphy is decorative, handwritten lettering. It’s done with a special pen that has a metal tip on the bottom called a nib. The nib is dipped in ink, and applying different levels of pressure can result in a thick or thin line. Traditional calligraphy can have an old-school Victorian look. In recent years, though, calligraphy has resurfaced as a modern art form with new lettering styles. One such modern form of calligraphy is called brush calligraphy, because instead of using the metal nib, calligraphers apply the same technique using a soft-tipped pen or marker.

Block lettering is a type of hand lettering featuring sans serif letters with a square or rectangular look. It’s often done in all caps.

AC Letters Calligraphy specializes in calligraphy, however I often use block lettering in my pieces to provide balance and give the eye a place to rest.

And no, my hand lettering is not a font :)

What’s your calligraphy style?

AC Letters Calligraphy has a signature, modern calligraphy style that is fanciful, but also minimalistic and easy to read. My work has minimal flourishes (like fancy scrolls at the tops and bottoms of letters) to promote a clean aesthetic and legibility. This is especially important for envelope addressing, so we can ensure your mail makes it to its final destination.

What kinds of objects can you calligraph?

Calligraphy is traditionally done using a pointed pen and ink or brush pen on paper. That makes calligraphy ideal for envelope addressing, place and escort cards, and other home decor pieces

However, calligraphy can also be done using paint pens or engraving, opening up the art to several more materials like wood, canvas, glass, leaves, and more!

What is the difference between a place Card and an escort card?

Place cards are set on the table, telling guests exactly which chair to sit in, and note the individual's name and meal assignment if needed.

Escort cards are set as one large display and note the individual's name with their table assignment so they know which table to sit at but leaves them to pick which chair to sit in. Escort cards are organized in alphabetical order to ensure guests can quickly find their name. Some folks may choose to make one large seating chart in lieu of individual escort cards. But escort cards can also double as a favor for guests!

What happens when you make a mistake?

Calligraphy is hand lettering, meaning it’s done by hand rather than a computer. So, of course, there are going to be mistakes! Not to worry, though — I’m a pro and will ensure all work is picture-perfect before being shipped to you. This is why I require a 20% excess of envelopes when working on envelope addressing projects, for example. In the unlikely possibility that you receive a calligraphy item with a mistake on it, I will fix the item at no charge to you as long as the information provided by you also didn’t have the error in it.

How long does calligraphy take?

The timelines for my calligraphy projects vary depending on the project size and materials I’m penning. A place card or envelope addressing project, for example, will typically take 2 to 3 weeks. Working with unique materials such as tiles or sea glass may take up to twice as long, as I need to source those items. I’ll discuss your project’s timeline with you when you inquire

How far in advance do I need to hire you for my event?

The sooner the better! Due to the handmade nature of my work, I only take on so many clients at one time. My calligraphy services typically take 2 to 3 weeks to deliver, however this can be delayed if I’m already booked with other customers. This is also dependent on you providing the information, and potentially materials, for lettering.

To ensure your project is completed and shipped far in advance of your event date, I recommend hiring AC Letters Calligraphy at least 2 to 3 months before your event.

The exception to this rule is for envelope addressing. If you’d like to work together for envelope addressing, I recommend hiring me 4 to 6 months in advance of your event date in order to send out your invitations 2 to 3 months before your event date.

I need something done fast. do you have a rush Fee?

I sure do. For any project requiring calligraphy to be done in less than 2 weeks, a rush fee will apply. The rush fee will range from 25% - 50% of the total order depending on the size of the order being rushed.

Where are you located?

My studio is based in San Diego, California, United States. However, because I ship worldwide, I’ve been lucky enough to work with customers all over the globe. Inquire today to see if I’ll ship to your location. (Hint: The answer is yes!)
